The pattern of Sabbath day observance must always include worship. After Adam and Eve entered mortality, they were commanded to “worship the Lord their God, and … offer the firstlings of their flocks [as] an offering unto the Lord … [in] similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father.
As the Savior lived on this earth he spoke of sacrifice. The day before he was to be crucified, he gathered with his disciples for the Lord’s Supper or in other words the sacrament
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
“For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”6
From that time forward, the Savior’s Atonement became the great and last sacrifice. When he appeared, on the American continent after His Resurrection, He conferred His priesthood upon His disciples and introduced the sacrament. In 3 Nephi 18 :6-7 Jesus said:
“And this shall ye always observe to do, … even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you.
“… And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.”7 3 Nephi 18:6–7.
It is remarkable that even during the dark periods of the apostasy, this pattern of Sabbath day worship and the sacrament continued to be practiced.
When the gospel was restored, under the direction of Peter, James and John. John the baptist appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and bestowed on them the priesthood authority necessary to administer the sacrament to the members of the Church.8
In a revelation given to Joseph Smith in 1831 the Lord commanded the Saints to go to the house of prayer, rest from the labors and pay devotion to the most high.
D& C 59: 11 Nevertheless thy vows shall be offered up in righteousness on all days and at all times; 12 But remember that on this, the Lord’s day, thou shalt offer thine oblations and thy sacraments unto the Most High, confessing thy sins unto thy brethren, and before the Lord. 13 And on this day thou shalt do none other thing, only let thy food be prepared with singleness of heart that thy fasting may be perfect, or, in other words, that thy joy may be full.
In this section, the Lord asks us to rest from our daily work.
This means we should perform NO LABOR that would keep us from
giving our full attention to spiritual matters.
In Exodus 20:10, The Lord told the Israelites “ Thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.
In Gospel Principles Chapter 24 under Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. Our prophets have told that we should not shop, hunt, fish , attend sports events or participate in similar activities on that day.
What TYPES OF THINGS would BE OKAY to do on SUNDAY?
Prophet Isaiah suggested that we should turn away from doing our own pleasure and should “call the Sabbath a delight”
In Isaiah 58: 13-14 Isaiah promised, “If thou turn away thy foot … from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, … and … honour him, not … finding thine own pleasure, … then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord.”15
From the book “ The miracle of forgiveness by Prophet Spencer W. Kimball he counseled:
“The Sabbath is a holy day in which to do worthy and holy things. Abstinence from work and recreation is important but insufficient. The Sabbath calls for constructive thoughts and acts, and if one merely lounges about doing nothing on the Sabbath, he is breaking it. To observe it, one will be on his knees in prayer, preparing lessons, studying the gospel, meditating, visiting the ill and distressed, sleeping, reading wholesome material, and attending all the meetings of that day to which he is expected.
[Failure] to do these proper things is a transgression on the omission side.”16 The Miracle of Forgiveness (1969), 96–97
In Gospel Principles book Chapter 24 on Keeping the Sabbath day Holy.
It suggests 3 questions we could ask ourselves when deciding if the activity is good for the Sabbath, and give advice on working during the Sabbath.
1st Will it uplift and inspire me? - Example; Does watching sports or other TV shows or other non church related videos on Sunday uplift and inspire me?
2nd. Does it show respect to the Lord? - Example; Does cooking a grand meal or having a large party show respect to the Lord?
3rd Does it direct my thought? -Example : Does listening to non uplifting music or reading a romance novel direct my thoughts in a positive wholesome way?
If we follow this outline and ask ourselves these three questions when deciding if the activity shows respect to the Sabbath. Then we will be much more able to keep the Sabbath day holy and show respect to our Lord Savior Jesus Christ.
“There may be times when we are required to work on the Sabbath. We should avoid this whenever possible, but when it is absolutely necessary, we should still maintain the spirit of Sabbath worship in our hearts as much as possible.”
Some years ago my husband was required to work Saturday nights to Sunday morning. On the Sundays where Church started at 9am, Jason would get home from work at 6:30 in the morning, and get ready to go to church by 9am. Even though it is hard for us we still manage to observe the Sabbath the best we could.
What are the BLESSINGS OF KEEPING THE SABBATH DAY HOLY
In Leviticus 26:2-12 The Lord promised us some wonderful blessings if we keep the Sabbath day holy.
“Ye shall keep my Sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.
“If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase. …
“… And ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.
“And I will give [you] peace in the land, … neither shall the sword go through your land. …
“For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, … and establish my covenant with you. …
“And I will set my tabernacle [that is, my temple] among you. …
“And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.”22
I Like the verse when the Lord speaks about “rain in due season and land shall yield an increase. Most of us are not farmers so how could this verse apply today? It is my belief that when we keep the Sabbath day holy we will be blessed in our positions or jobs. The Lord will make our lives fruitful. He will bless us at work, at home and wherever we may be if we strive to keep the Sabbath day holy at all times.
Prophet Gordon B. Hinckley has promised: “If you have any doubt about the wisdom, the divinity of observing the Sabbath Day, … stay home and gather your family about you, teach them the gospel, enjoy yourselves together on the Sabbath Day, come to your meetings, participate. You will know that the principle of the Sabbath is a true principle which brings with it great blessings.”17 Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley (1997), 559
Elder Bruce R Mc Conkie said;
To this very day, “the matter of Sabbath observance remains … as one of the great tests which divides the righteous from the worldly and wicked,” .21
There’s a good example of this, that we all know of. This popular restaurant does not do any business at all on Sunday. I believe the reason for their continuous success, of this business is because they have decided not to be of the world, and to be closed on Sunday.
In the beginning God created the heaven, earth and all things that are in them. In six days he labored and on the 7th day he rested.
I BELEIVE the creation was VERY IMPORTANT to Heavenly Father and yet he still rested from his labors on the SEVENTH DAY
This is a GREAT EXAMPLE of how IMPORTANT it is for us to also REST FROM ALL OUR LABORS on the Sabbath day.
